That someone is Joshua Davis. You know him as DJ Shadow. And come Halloween weekend, he’s setting up shop at Tulips FTW for the closing dates of his coast-to-coast run — October 31st and November 1st — the last stop on a tour that’s spent two months working its way across the continent before landing here.
The record in question is Endtroducing….., the 1996 debut that turned a stack of borrowed vinyl into something closer to architecture. Built almost entirely from samples, it didn’t sound like a collage. It sounded like a single, patient idea, assembled by someone who’d spent more hours in record store basements than most people spend anywhere. Thirty years on, the thing hasn’t aged so much as settled, the way good concrete does.
Here’s the angle nobody saw coming: Davis has never played this album front to back. Not once. Not at any show, on any continent, in three decades of touring. This is the first time. He said as much himself, he was ready to do it eventually, but thirty years gave him the excuse he didn’t need but took anyway.
That means Fort Worth gets “Building Steam with a Grain of Salt” the way it was sequenced, not cherry-picked. It means “Stem/Long Stem” and “Mutual Slump” get to breathe in their original order, the way the record intended before playlists took that decision out of everybody’s hands. It means “Midnight in a Perfect World” lands where it’s supposed to land, not as an encore, not as a nod to the hits, but as the fourth beat in a story that was written to be heard whole.
Davis has spent three decades refusing to repeat himself; collaborations with Run the Jewels, Nas, Thom Yorke, records that went sideways into rock and back again.
None of that is what’s happening this fall. This fall is a straight line back to where it started, played by the same hands that built it, for an audience that in most cases wasn’t alive to buy it the week it came out.
The tour opened in September in San Diego. It closes here, on this stage, in November. Nineteen dates, and Fort Worth gets the last word.
