Agnes Obel has announced The Meaning of Flowers, her first new album since 2020’s Myopia, arriving September 18 via Deutsche Grammophon. The Danish-born, Berlin-based songwriter has also shared its first single, “Laymelli.”
Written, recorded, arranged and produced by Obel in her Berlin studio, the 12-track album grew out of the years following the birth of her first child and explores ideas around new beginnings, motherhood, transformation and our connection to the natural world. Its influences stretch from the poetry of Enheduanna and the philosophy of Hannah Arendt and Emanuele Coccia to ’70s film scores and Danish pop from the ’80s and ’90s.
Obel handles vocals, piano, keys, synths and samples across the record, joined by musicians on violin, viola, cello, bass, lap steel, flute, saxophone and percussion. “Laymelli,” one of several songs influenced by ideas of metamorphosis and the natural life cycle, is out now.
The Meaning of Flowers arrives September 18 digitally, on CD and vinyl.
