Bay Area trio Sour Widows will release their second album, Sigil, October 23 via Julia’s War, a record built around endings, grief and the possibility that whatever comes next might actually be better.
The album takes its title from a dream and opens with another: songwriter Maia Sinaiko imagining the world being swallowed by a black hole, only for their father to respond to the impending apocalypse with the thought, “But it could be amazing.” That idea runs through Sigil, where loss, cruelty and personal upheaval repeatedly give way to solidarity, freedom and hard-won hope.
Recorded in Los Angeles with Jay Som’s Melina Duterte, the album expands Sour Widows’ sound with cello, violin, organ and electronics while pushing toward shorter, more immediate songwriting. Singles “Blood in the Grass” and “Lucky Star” are out now.
Sour Widows also hit the road with Squirrel Flower this fall, including an October 27 stop at Ruins in Dallas.
