Wavves has announced a new album, Cherry Soda, arriving October 30 via I Surrender Records, alongside its first single, “Pinesol.”
The ten-track record started with Nathan Williams wondering what an early-2000s Wavves emo album might sound like. His answer was, in his own words, a “mall emo record,” pulling the heightened emotion and melodrama of that era into the distorted guitars, California punk and huge melodic hooks that have long defined Wavves.
“Pinesol” gives the first real look at where that idea lands, pairing a heavier, grunge-leaning guitar sound with a loose bassline and Williams’ instinct for melody. The song itself came from an unusual place: a run of cold cases and true-crime stories involving people attempting to cover their tracks with household cleaners.
After first introducing Cherry Soda earlier this year, Williams returned to the material and reshaped it into what he considers the finished version of the record. The result is Wavves approaching emo on its own terms: messy, melodic, distorted and still unmistakably Wavves.
