Fog Lake, the project of Montreal-based, Newfoundland-raised musician Aaron Powell, has released two new singles, “Gamut” and “Styrofoam,” ahead of his seventh album, Hollowbody, arriving November 13.
Described by Powell as his “evil ‘Wonderwall,’” “Gamut” explores making the best of difficult circumstances, while “Styrofoam” reflects on the lingering absence of a lost friendship. The latter, written in just five minutes, arrives with a wonderfully homespun video filmed by Powell using a $20 digital camera and $5 puppets.
Written over three weeks in Powell’s native Newfoundland, the ten-track album was shaped by a vintage 1980s Tascam recording device that allowed him to work quickly without getting caught up in production details. Co-produced, mixed, and mastered by longtime collaborator Warren Hildebrand of Foxes in Fiction, Hollowbody promises a more polished and crystalline sound while retaining the intimate, worn-in character that has defined Fog Lake’s music for more than a decade.
