OUR PICKS FOR THIS WEEK

Tuesday, October 20th
Black Country, New Road
Longhorn Ballroom
There aren’t many bands making music quite like Black Country, New Road. The British collective moves effortlessly between indie rock, folk, jazz and just about anything else that catches their imagination. They’re one of the more interesting bands to emerge in the past several years, and seeing them at the Longhorn should be a treat.

Wednesday, October 21st
The Jungle Giants
Tulips FTW
Australia’s The Jungle Giants started out making catchy indie rock and gradually found their way onto the dance floor. These days, their music is full of big grooves, synths and hooks that stick with you. They were our Front and Center artists in Issue 13, and now we get to see them bring those songs to Tulips.

Friday, October 23rd
IMPROVEMENT MOVEMENT
Rubber Gloves, Denton
Atlanta’s Improvement Movement make wonderfully weird psychedelic pop that’s full of unexpected turns, beautiful harmonies and plenty of experimentation. There’s a lot going on in their music, but somehow it all fits together. If you caught our Friday Aux interview with the band in Issue 13, here’s your chance to see them in person.

Friday, October 23rd
Vince Staples
South Side Ballroom, Dallas
Vince Staples has been one of the most interesting voices in hip-hop for more than a decade. The Long Beach rapper has a sharp sense of humor, plenty to say and a knack for working with producers who push his music in unexpected directions. His live shows bring all of that together, and Dallas gets him Friday night.

Sunday, October 25th
Hovvdy
Tulips FTW
Austin’s Hovvdy make the kind of music that sneaks up on you. Beautiful melodies, understated arrangements and songs that somehow feel both intimate and expansive. They’ve built a devoted following over the years, and Tulips is a great room to see them. And don’t miss opener Emma Ogier. She’s a terrific young songwriter with a voice and a sound that deserve a lot more attention.
