Dallas art-pop/folktronic artist Matt of Matts has released his debut single, “Come Thou Fount of Unforgiving,” a dark reworking of a childhood hymn that digs into fatherhood, religious trauma and the uneasy space between fear and healing.
Self-produced, the track pairs loose acoustic guitar with synth textures and backing vocals from Matt’s 16-year-old daughter. “Somewhere along the way I learned to sing to what I most fear,” he says. “In the past that’s been the fear of losing my mind. Later it was displaced by the fear of losing one of my children.”
The result is part love song, part anti-hymn: intimate, strange and deliberately unresolved, with shades of Bill Callahan, Mount Eerie, The Magnetic Fields and Sufjan Stevens.
