Sen Morimoto has shared “Chewing Gum,” the second single from their forthcoming fourth album, Time Is On Your Side, out October 23 via Sooper Records.
Following the loose acoustic pull of first single “Overthinker,” “Chewing Gum” moves into stranger territory, with each instrument playing in its own time signature before the competing meters periodically fall back together. Kaina Castillo joins Morimoto on the chorus, their voices blending closely enough that Morimoto says they had trouble telling them apart during recording.
“This song is all about playing with time,” Morimoto says. “It feels like a conversation between past and present versions of myself.”
Morimoto also created the accompanying video after their brother Yuya suggested animating a singing wad of gum. Teaching themselves stop-motion using Silly Putty and Big League Chew, Morimoto combined the animation with sunset footage Castillo shot in Massachusetts, describing the finished result as somewhere between early YouTube and “warped ’90s Nickelodeon stuff.”
Time Is On Your Side arrives October 23 and features Morimoto’s live band of Castillo, Ryan Person, Elijah Bradford and Brok Mende.
