Wavves and Say Anything have joined forces for Cherry Soda, a new collaborative album arriving September 18 via I Surrender Records. The 10-track record started with a fairly specific question from Wavves’ Nathan Williams: what would Wavves have sounded like if he had made an emo album in the early 2000s? After digging deeper into Max Bemis’ catalog, Williams approached the Say Anything frontman with the idea of making what he describes as “a mall emo record.”
What began as Wavves leaning into emo quickly became more of a two-way exchange. Williams pulls from the emotional directness of Say Anything, while Bemis moves toward the darker, more blunt edges of Wavves.
“He became more emo and I became more Wavves-y,” Bemis says. “I think we brought out some of the stuff that isn’t most obvious in each other.”
Cherry Soda features 10 songs, including “Keep What Hurts,” “Deathx1k,” “Gone Away,” “So Low,” “Still Alive” and the title track.
